You Never Can Tell
April 28 - May 16, 1999
From the Syracuse Stage press release:
This is a comic gem from early in Shaw's career and represents his lightest and airiest foray into the battle of the sexes. Mr. Valentine is a dentist in the seaside resort of Devon and not terribly successful. He owes his curmudgeon of a landlord six week's rent. Into his life drops Gloria, a young woman with a decidedly feminist outlook thanks to her mother, a formidable expert on everything Twentieth Century. Quite smitten, Valentine pursues Gloria. Gloria rebuffs and retreats. Valentine's curmudgeon turns out to be Gloria's estranged father, who has not seen her, her twin sibling, nor her mother for eighteen years. Can these varied and loose ends ever meet? Of course, but not without the aid of a benevolent and seemingly all-knowing waiter. Moonlight, masquerades, and Shaw's telltale wit combine to make this an altogether enchanting romantic delight.
